Education Program Overview
The Histotripsy Education Program at the University of Michigan is dedicated to preparing top-tier scientists, engineers, and clinicians to pioneer the future of acoustic medicine. As the birthplace of histotripsy, our center offers world-class academic training through master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral tracks integrated directly with industry and clinical partners.
Our educational pathways combine rigorous academic coursework with hands-on technical workshops in our state-of-the-art facilities, real-world translational research across cancer and neuro applications, and direct industry placement through our partnership with HistoSonics.

Core Educational Pillars
World’s First MS Certificate:
Specialized master’s-level curriculum covering ultrasound physics, medical device design, and regulatory pathways.
Industry & Clinical Integration:
Direct collaboration with clinical faculty and hands-on industry internships at HistoSonics.
Funded PhD Fellowships:
Dedicated doctoral support through the Histotripsy Center.
Focused Postdoctoral Mentorship:

Programs Available

Master’s Program: Histotripsy MS Certificate
Established as part of the University of Michigan BME Advanced Medical Product Engineering and Development (AMPED) MS program, this track provides comprehensive training in medical device innovation with a histotripsy focus.

Curriculum Focus:
Histotripsy principles, medical imaging, medical product development, regulatory affairs, and project design.

Hands-On Experience:
Coursework features immersive laboratory workshops held at the Histotripsy Center.

Industry Internship:
Students completing the certificate participate in professional internships directly with HistoSonics.
Doctoral Track: Histotripsy PhD Fellowship
As part of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) PhD program, our PhD track is designed for candidates with strong engineering backgrounds seeking to lead breakthrough research in non-invasive acoustic therapies.

Fellowship Opportunities:
Selected PhD students receive the Histotripsy PhD Fellowship to work on joint industry-academic projects. Additional university and department fellowships are also available.

Translational Mentorship:
Dissertations combine core technical research with disease-specific preclinical studies, supported by clinical collaborators serving on dissertation committees.


Postdoctoral Program & NIH Fellowships
Designed to accelerate early-career FUS researchers toward independent leadership roles in academia or industry.

Prerequisites:
Applicants must hold a PhD in Focused Ultrasound or a closely related biomedical engineering field.

Funding Pathways:
NIH F32 training fellowships are available through our institutional collaboration with the UM Department of Radiology.
