What is Histotripsy?

Histotripsy is a pioneering, non-invasive technology invented at the University of Michigan in 2002.

  • What it does:

    Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound waves delivered from outside the body to create microbubbles inside a target tumor or diseased tissue.

  • How it works:

    The microbubbles expand and collapse within tens to hundreds of microseconds, mechanically breaking down targeted tumor cells into a liquid debris that the body naturally absorbs—all without incisions, heat, or toxicity.

  • Current status:

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved histotripsy for non-invasive treatment of liver tumors in October 2023, and thousands of patients have already been treated.
